Acupuncture
Acupuncture originated in China and it has been in practice in other far eastern cultures for more than 2000 years where it still features in the mainstream Healthcare as both a stand-alone therapy and in combination with conventional western medicine.
Acupuncture is now widely used and accepted all over the world. In the UK more and more people are finding out what acupuncture can do for them.
Who has acupuncture?
Many of our environmental and lifestyle choices our body can become depleted and damaged which can result in symptoms of illness disease or pain. Acupuncture works to balance out these disruptions within our body and restore physical and emotional harmony. People of all ages use acupuncture to relieve pain, specific symptoms, generally unwell and to maintain the body’s natural balance, to achieve this we seek out the root course of disease and not just treat the symptoms; this can be used effectively alongside conventional medicine. What happens during a treatment?
The acupuncturist will initially need a consultation of over an hour and use a number of diagnostic methods which include taking a full life history, pulses and looking at your tongue. The single use of a fine sterile needle will be inserted into specific points and you can feel nothing to a tingling sensation. Treatment sessions vary in frequency and duration depending on the condition or conditions presented, sometimes other techniques may be used but these would be discussed prior. Occasionally one or two treatments may be sufficient though usually five to six show adequate changes and some people have regular visits to maintain good health.
Is it safe?
The result s from two independent surveys published in the British medical journal (2001) concluded the risk of serious adverse reactions is less than 1 in 10,000. Treatments can sometimes include tiredness, mild dizziness and occasional bruising but this would be discussed prior to treating. It is always recommended that you tell your doctor prior to treatment as an acupuncturist we work alongside conventional GP’s and medicines.
